Volkswagen Golf R

Volkswagen Golf R: replaces the Golf V R32 as the new flagship model. The engine of the Golf R has been downsized from a 3.2 litre V6 to a 2.0 litre turbo four. The Golf Rs engine is virtually identical to that used by the Audi S3, and produces a total of 188kW of power and 330Nm of torque. All 330Nm of torque is available between 2400rpm and 5200rpm, giving the Golf R excellent tractability across much of the rev range.

Volkswagen claims the Golf R will consume an average of 8.7 litres per 100km, whether fitted with the manual or automatic gearbox. Features of this car inlclude bi-xenon headlamps, front and rear parking sensors, privacy glass, an anti-theft alarm and touchscreen audio system with in-dash CD stacker. Cruise control, a trip computer, rain-sensing wipers and dusk-sensing headlamps are also standard.A five-door Golf R with DSG gearbox retails for $54,490 before on-road costs and is the most expensive configuration in the range.

American Car Buyers Favour GTI Over Golf

2015 Volkswagen Golf GTI
U.S. new car buyers would seemingly prefer to own a new Volkswagen Golf GTI than the Golf on which its based. Thats no surprise.

But while Chevrolet Camaro buyers would presumably favour the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 over the Camaro on which its based, they dont actually make purchases based on that preference. Yet Golf buyers are willing to spend extra on the performance-oriented GTI.

Is this a problem? Surely Volkswagen of America enjoys selling a fair number of the more upmarket car. Surely its more profitable. But the GTIs relative success serves to highlight the rarity of the conventional Golf. Click the little dropdown menu in the chart below to go back as far as 2009s Golf vs. GTI sales comparison, and you can check out current inventory, as well.

Over the last five and a half years, Volkswagen has sold 81,434 Golfs (and Rabbits) in America, excluding the GTI and higher-performance Golf R and R32. Honda has sold 96,001 Civics in the last three months. If you think that comparison is unfair, remember that the Golf is one of the planets best-selling cars. Its an unfair comparison... because America.

The Dodge Dart, on the other hand, has been criticized for not attracting more buyers. Yet 83,388 were sold in 2013. As for the Golfs traditionally lofty pricing scheme, remember that expensive cars do sell. Its cousin over at Audi, the A4, has generated 100,069 sales in the last two and a half years.

Auto reviewers dont typically agree with the car buying publics assessment. The Golf is a current member of GCBCs The Good 12.
