Now in June, the Escalade and Escalade ESV, with 2 Escalade EXT sales, climbed to nearly 3000 units in June, a 57% year-over-year increase and an 18% jump compared with May of this year.

Cadillac sold 1907 regular-wheelbase Escalades, an 84% year-over-year improvement, and 1058 long-wheelbase Escalade ESVs, a 59% jump compared with June of last year. In other words, the big Escalade outsold the Land Rover Range Rover, and then Cadillac sold another 1907 copies of the "smaller" Escalade.

This sales pace still doesnt compare with the achievements made by the Escalade a decade ago. Cadillac sold 2698 regular-wheelbase Escalades in June 2004 and 1246 Escalade ESVs (and another 670 Escalade EXTs.)

But in 2004, the Mercedes-Benz GL-Class didnt exist, we hadnt yet witnessed a Hurricane Katrina-fuelled gas price increase, and the purchase/lease of a gigantic SUV wasnt perceived to be as distasteful.

In case you hadnt heard, June was a pretty good month for GMs other big SUVs, the increasingly costly ones made by Chevrolet and GMC. You can click any model name in the tables below to find historical monthly and yearly U.S. auto sales data. You can also select a make and model at GCBCs Sales Stats page. These tables are now sortable, so you can rank large luxury SUVs any which way you like. Suggestions on how GCBC should break down segments can be passed on through the Contact page.

Why combine the pair? BMW has reorganized their naming structure, but the 4-Series of June 2014 was a 3-Series in June 2013.

Regardless, the 4-Series continues to be the far more popular two-door BMW family. (BMW is starting to sell an Audi A5 Sportback-like 4-Series Gran Coupe with four doors, however.) BMW Canada only sold 88 copies of the 2-Series in June.

The 2ers entry-level competition features more doors and, in the form of the Mercedes-Benz CLA and Audi A3, attract far more buyers. Mercedes-Benz sold a monthly average of 373 CLAs in the second quarter of 2014, up from 179 in the previous seven months. Audi sold 276 A3s in June, and all 675 A3s sold so far this year found homes in the second quarter, after the A3s hiatus ended.

Audi Canadas base price for the A3 is $31,100; the CLA starts at $34,300; the 2-Series at $36,000. Among vehicles with base prices above $50,000, the most popular vehicle in June was the Mercedes-Benz M-Class. This was just the second month since September of last year that something other than the BMW X5 led all $50K+ vehicles.

Historical monthly and yearly sales figures for any of these top-selling luxury vehicles can always be accessed through the dropdown menu at GCBCs Sales Stats page, and for those not viewing the mobile version of this site, near the top right of this page, as well.

$50,000 CDN (before delivery) is an arbitrary borderline, but if GCBC was to follow this new system of designating only expensive vehicles as luxury vehicles, $50K seemed like a safe place to begin - it equals the average U.S. new car transaction price plus $15,000, plus another $5000 to account for Canadian increases. Plenty of less expensive vehicles with specific models feature prices above $50,000 - M, RS, and AMG models come to mind, specifically - but in the case of this list, we know that none of the registrations were of cars priced at $35,900, as would be the case with the BMW 320i, which costs less than a Hyundai Santa Fe 2.0T Limited. The biggest problem with a $50,000 minimum price of entry? Cars like the Cadillac XTS, which starts at $49,440, sporty cars like the $49,500 Audi TT, and SUVs like the $49,990 Acura MDX and $49,565 Chevrolet Tahoe. Volkswagen recently increased the base Touaregs price to $50,975; GM jacked up the base Yukon price up to $51,090.
The new Cadillac CTS sedans base price is above $50,000, but not the base price for other cars in the CTS lineup. Yet. Total CTS sales in June: 85, up 19.7%.
Total Infiniti G/Q50/Q60 volume: up 92.7% to 343 in June; up 60.5% to 1965 YTD.
